Founded in 2013, NISEA is a cooperative specializing in fisheries and aquaculture economics and management, committed to the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources through statistical monitoring, scientific studies, and research projects.

Named after the ancient Greek port of Nisea, the cooperative serves as a bridge between the scientific community, the production sector, and management authorities. With established expertise across the entire seafood value chain – from fishing and aquaculture to processing and marketing – NISEA operates at both national and international levels.

Thanks to an operational structure of over 60 people, including employees and collaborators, the activities of NISEA include research studies and projects, technical support to public administrations for statistical production and management planning, and consulting for public and private entities on management systems and sustainable development in fisheries and aquaculture. Key activities include the collection of socio-economic data on fishing fleets and processing industries under the National Fisheries Data Collection Programme (DCF) and participation in EU research projects, including DG-MARE, EASME, CINEA, the 7th Framework Programme, and Horizon 2020.

Thanks to their extensive experience in the sector, the members of the core team regularly participate in the sector’s leading technical and scientific forums, including the European Commission’s Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) and the FAO’s commissions on fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean (GFCM). This has enabled the cooperative to take on key roles in national and international networks and initiatives.
